Musical mediation

According to the understanding of those sociologists involved in the sociology of the Actor-Network Theory (ANT), the term mediation contains the riches of its definition within its structure. The suffix “-tion” emphasizes the idea of a process, a dynamic, a relationship to music that is fluid and continually in progress. Without the prefix “inter-” (as in intermediary), the term mediation encourages the idea that music, like actors, can foster interaction. It promises to consider those “handholds” that music provides listeners, as well as how audiences develop modes of attachment to music.

Musical mediation involves not only activities (see ADA) pursued by the artists and organizations in order to establish a connection between the work and the audience outside the musical experience (the concert), but also necessitates an examination of the conditions favourable to the creation of the music-audience connection.
