Listening to music is a creative act that results in discovery, according to Ben Ratliff, music critic and author of book Every Song After. Discovering music is a kind of identity quest that helps us uncover the world and where we belong in it. In this way, the playlist suggestions made by Spotify, which are based on algorithms, make listeners passive. Ratliff says Spotify can’t suggest music based on the emotions of the listener, firstly because these emotions are complex, but also because this kind of categorization reduces music to one emotion. There is a part of  the mystery of music that cannot be elucidated by robots.
