Journalist Chloe Veltman seems to have appreciated Tom Hemphill’s cactus performance of John Cage’s Renga, held on May 17th at the Bay Area Arts Scene in San Francisco. The critic adds: “when it comes to sheer novelty, there’s really no way a man playing a guitar can compete with a man playing a pair of cactuses‘’. This sentiment is typical of much contemporary music, in which the interest seems to dwell in novelty. Should contemporary music be about more than piquing curiosity?
