Master’s project in Management in Cultural Enterprises at HEC Montréal.
By Xavier Roy, under the supervision of Johanne Turbide.
Many analysts and stakeholders of Quebec’s cultural milieu consider that the performing arts sector in the province is in a state of oversupply and that public funding for the arts, targeted towards creation of new works, has encouraged market fragmentation. In his research, Xavier Roy aims to challenge these ideas by studying financial data from a sample of classical music organizations funded with operating grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Xavier Roy proves that public funding in this specific sector is increasingly fragmented, and suggests that this fragmentation leads to financial vulnerability for certain types of classical music organizations.
