The composer Mari Valverde talks about her family’s lack of understanding toward her music. The development of a musical ear might be constrained as a result of the rigid categorization of musical genres. Valverde paraphrases a quote by Dr. Geoffrey Boers, choral director of University of Washington: “Folk and Pop music is in fact contemporary ‘classical’ music, and it is as appropriate for an ensemble to sing an arrangement of the Beatles or Elton John as it is for them to sing Brahms or Britten.” The composer believes that categorization has a bad influence on interaction between the lay audience and “classical” music, and could potentially be solved by musical programming that makes different genres coexist.
