Manon Gauthier, the woman responsible for culture, heritage and design for the city of Montreal, emphasizes the importance of access to culture, to its diversity and to the role of institutions as mediators in Montreal. According to Gauthier, “Bringing the Metropolitan Orchestra with Yannick Nézet-Séguin to the Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs church in Verdun, certainly has an impact on the community.” She also adds that initiatives that aim to democratize culture have economic benefits: “Each event, no matter how small as long as it brings people together, makes, in a general way, an economic impact in its neighborhood.”
