A recent study led by sociologist Gerry Vennestra (University of British Colombia) asked 1595 music lovers from Vancouver and Toronto about their musical tastes. Even if people tend to prefer certain music genres, the study showed that they’re still able to prioritize their tastes. Professor Vennestra also found a distinction between ”highbrow” and ”lowbrow” music genres, whose categories were associated with social class. Blues, classical, pop and rock music were determined to be ” highbrow ” music, while disco, easy listening, heavy metal and rap music were considered ”lowbrow” music.
