Is opera only for snobs?

According to the humorist, writer and English actor, Chris Addison, the link constructed in collective imagination between “opera” and “snobism” would explain the resistance by audiences faced with the genre. If some people believe the cost of opera concerts reflects the snob aura of opera, Addison deconstructs this prejudice. In fact, the cost to attend four opera concerts would be less than for only one match of the Arsenal football team, he points out.
