Opera Australia has modified its program so that the most well-known pieces figure at the first plan, in order to renew audiences attracted by these famous pieces. The result? The usual audience became jaded from not hearing lesser known works, while new listeners were not attracted by a repertory that seems outdated to a 21st-century audience. Journalist RIchard Letts proposes a variety of solutions for audience renewal. One of them is to perform recently composed operas, so that new audiences can consider opera as an art form of their time, reflecting their concerns in a context they understand.
